1 .Principle Of A.C. Generator
like DC generator The alternator operate on the principle that an e.m.ff is induced in a conductor when it moves across a magnetic field . An unvarying magnetic field is provided by means of a field system excited from a D.C. supply. The field flux completes it path through the iron lamination of an armature carrying conductor , in which this alternating e.m.f. is induced .
2. Construction
Alternator are designed with stationary armature and rotating field magnet . The armature which is an iron ring of lamination having slots in its inner sides to hold the conductor is called the stator ,
whiles the field system which is revolved between the armature rings is called the rotor.
A prime mover is used to revolve the rotor and the movement of the field flux produce an e.m.f exactly as would be produces by the rotation of the conductor in a stationary field . the alternators are usually wound for singe phase , two phase and three phase . the three phase machines are mostly used because these machines give the greater power and have less cost than the other two machines for the same size.
